DC is Amazing: A New Decade
April 5, 2022
DC, a studio that has brought heroes like Batman and Superman to life, rings in high hopes for the new decade. Its most recent films, such as The Joker, The Suicide Squad, The Batman, and Harley Quinn Birds of Prey, sparked an age of experimentation. These new films rival recent Marvel movies with a unique take on the superhero genre. Specifically, these films excel with engaging direction and well-written characters.
Unlike Marvel, DC movies never had a clear plan. Marvel movies for a decade have created a universe that came to its climax with Avengers: Endgame. However, this plan backfires on recent Marvel movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals, which felt uninspired because it has to resemble the same format as Marvel’s other movies. Since these movies have to follow a specific formula for so long, it’s become bland and generic. Every film has to balance comedy, action, and recycle the same overused characters.
In contrast, DC has always been experimental. Movies such as Harley Quinn Birds of Prey, and The Joker bring audiences new stories that are virtually different in every way. There is no path DC has to follow. Therefore, there is no weight holding them down.
In addition, DC spins new takes on the superhero genre by giving creative minds a chance to shine. Its most recent film, The Batman, takes a grittier turn with the iconic hero. With the astonishing directing of Matt Reaves, The Batman felt organic by introducing a grounded and gothic world. In addition, Todd Philips’s The Joker is a unique origin story of the most notorious villain. The film takes full advantage of its manic storytelling and uncomfortable atmosphere. Finally, James Gunn brings new delight to a bizarre band of heroes in The Suicide Squad. James Gunn’s developed script and hilarious dialogue were factors that created the best blockbuster of 2021.
All in all, DC promises to release more gems in the future. DC succeeds Marvel films with its risk-taking and new direction. At the start of a new decade, no one can deny that DC is here to stay.
