Scrolling through social media, it’s easy to encounter trends such as the “ick” or disturbing videos promoting stalking and obsessive behaviors toward their crush or partner. These videos often romanticize unhealthy behaviors, potentially influencing young viewers.
The “ick” trend occurs when someone’s significant other does something, whether it is big or small, that causes them to experience embarrassment or awkwardness.
“It kind of normalizes berating them for every little thing that they do,” said Isa Rivera, a senior at SECTA high school who shared her thoughts on these troubling trends.
Videos tagged as ‘relatable’ depict creators expressing jealousy, stalking, or obsessive behaviors towards their partners. Commenters often agree, normalizing abusive and toxic behavior, especially among adolescents and young adults.
“I think that these creators need help and possible counseling,” said Rivera. “I don’t think this is good for anyone, and I don’t know why they’d be making videos about this.”
“BookTok,” a TikTok community, also romanticizes toxic relationships by recommending ‘dark romance’ books that promote stalking and abuse. The romanticization of these traits can lead to harmful relationship standards that lead them to danger.
“The many books that I’ve seen grow popular promote unhealthy and often abusive relationships, and they normalize it,” said Rivera.
Here are some of the ways to prevent toxic trends from affecting your relationships.
- Communication is key. Talk to your partner about how these trends are harmful and seek reassurance.
- Limit Social Media. Spend less time on social media and block or ignore harmful content.
- Set Boundaries. Discuss and respect each other’s boundaries without letting social media influence your perceptions.
By following these tips, couples help maintain healthy relationships free from toxic social media influences. Raising awareness about the dangers of romanticizing toxic behavior is crucial for fostering positive and respectful relationships.
