The band Twenty One Pilots is one of the most well-known bands in the alternative scene, having multiple songs with at least a billion streams and they have impacted the lives of many people. Even with being so well known, not everybody knows about their album history and which album to go to first when they’re interested in listening to them.
NO PHUN INTENDED: Between 2007 and 2008, frontman Tyler Joseph of the popular alternative band Twenty One Pilots released a solo project before forming the band, called No Phun Intended where he would release 18 songs. One of the songs, titled Trees, would make its way to 2 other future albums and would become widely used in his future career.
SELF-TITLED: On December 29th, 2009, the band would make their debut under the name with their first self-released album named Twenty One Pilots with two other members named Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, who soon left the band.
REGIONAL AT BEST: In 2011, the band released their second album titled Regional at Best which featured the debut of 3 popular fan-favorite songs called Car Radio, Holding On to You, and Guns for Hands and the return of the song Trees from No Phun Intended. In the recording of this album, Josh Dun joined the band who would then end up staying in the band all the way through. Unfortunately, the album was removed by the label they released it under due to the band asking to make a remastered version of it, which later never fully came out.
VESSEL: The third studio album titled Vessel was released in 2013, featuring rerecorded versions of Car Radio, Holding On to You, Guns for Hands, and Trees. This album was their first album to reach the Billboard 200 chart, charting number 58 at the time.
BLURRYFACE: Released in 2015 was their most successful album titled Blurryface. The album contains the hit songs Stressed Out and Ride which placed on the Billboard Hot 100 on the top 5 and both have over 1 billion streams today. The album got so much success, selling more than 1.5 million copies and ended up being one of the most streamed albums in rock history and is by far their most recognizable album.
TRENCH: In 2018, after a year-long hiatus, the band released Trench, the album being a concept album with the themes of mental health, being set in the fictional city Joseph created called Dema.
SCALED AND ICY: Released in 2021 was Scaled and Icy, an album that was completely made as a type of “propaganda” for the band’s existing lore concepts. Following up from Trench, the lore of how Tyler Joseph’s character attempted to escape from the fictional city Dema and failed, being thrown into a cell and forced to write music for the people of the city. The popular songs like Shy Away and Saturday charted on the Billboards, setting more success for the two.
CLANCY: Their newest album is called Clancy, being released this year (2024). The album has received a lot of success for the band already, with fans viewing it as a strong comeback from their last album.
According to fans, when asked what their favorite album is, the answers vary. 3 Juniors from Las Vegas Academy were interviewed and asked the question of their favorite album, James Pruce said, “My favorite album is Trench because of the lore”. Max Medrano said “My favorite album is Blurryface”, and DJ Jones when asked said “I have to say Trench”. It’s apparent that to the fans, the favorite seems to be Trench, whether that’s because of the storyline the album follows or just purely because it has the best songs, fans sure love it regardless.
