For Joslyn Rakes, a freshman at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts (LVA), life as a Media Arts and Communications major is both creative and fast paced. The program allows students to explore various aspects of media, including writing, video production, and graphic design. “Usually, I get a lot of confusion about what we even do,” said Rakes. “So I have to explain that to people outside the major.” A typical day in her life starts off with her going to her Multimedia Communications class on even days where she is writing articles and doing media coverage on any topics she finds interesting.
Rakes chose the Media Arts program at LVA because it offers opportunities to explore a wide range of skills. “I was super interested in LVA when I found out that Media Arts provides students with a chance to get into graphic design, video, and news articles,” said Rakes. “I was so intrigued that I thought, ‘Hey, this could be fun’.”
Currently, Rakes is working on a news package video about the school’s theater production of Beauty and the Beast. “It’s a video that will explain the backstage information about the shows and performances by the theater department,” she said. Her project involves planning, filming, and editing footage to provide a behind the scenes look at what goes into making the production happen. From interviewing the cast and crew to capturing rehearsals, Rakes is focused on telling a story that highlights the effort and creativity of the theater department.
Rakes is clear about the importance of preparation for anyone considering this major. “I would definitely say if you study this beforehand, it’ll give you a good handful of information to use,” she advises. “If you have knowledge of Adobe or any editing application, it’ll really help.” Whether it’s graphic design, video editing, or writing, these skills form the foundation of the program and give students the tools they need to succeed in their projects.
The major isn’t just about technical skills. It covers a range of media, including video production, graphic design, and journalism, giving students the tools to tell impactful stories. Rakes chose Media Arts at LVA because of its hands on approach and the opportunity to explore multiple creative fields. She’s spent time learning applications like Adobe Express which are essential for her projects. While challenging at times, the major allows her to combine technical skills with her passion for storytelling, making each project a rewarding experience as she brings her ideas to life.
