Films, we love them. We all look forward to going home after a long day at work and watching a film. We all have our favorite genres, whether we want to laugh, cry, be on the edge of our seats, or not be able to sleep at night. Horror movies are one of the best movie genres in the film industry. There are different types such as slashers, paranormal, monster, and found footage. I am going to focus on supernatural and paranormal horror films.
I found a ranked list from Entertainment Weekly and this was their top 5 paranormal films.
- The Exorcist (1973)
- Evil Dead II (1987)
- The Shining (1980)
- The Haunting (1963)
- Hausu (1977)
That is a very good list from Entertainment Weekly, and more opinions from other people. I would like to add my own opinion on what I would rank my favorite horror films.
MY LIST
- Blair Witch Project (1999)
The Blair Witch Project is number one on my list due to its mystery and the way it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The mystery of not seeing the monster and only the campers being scared really gets to me each time I watch it.
- Paranormal Activity (2007)
Paranormal Activity is just a good way of viewing a haunted house movie that is actually realistic. The true expressions of fear of the voice actors, the perfect pacing of the story and how the haunting events progress is truly an amazing watch and never gets old for me.
- The Conjuring 2 (2016)
The Conjuring 2 is probably my favorite on this list. The story, the color, the cinematography, everything about it I love. I believe it should get more attention than it does. A scene I will always love is when the daughter is being interviewed and the camera puts her out of focus in the background only leaving the main character in frame perfectly clear. Slowly the girl in the blurriness becomes the ghost haunting her and her home. This movie is underrated in the Conjuring franchise.
- The Fourth Kind (2009)
The Fourth Kind is an alien abduction movie and is probably one of the scariest movies I have seen. The jumpscares, the story, and it really did not let me sleep after watching it for the first time. Truly one of the most terrifying films I’ve watched.
- Smile 2 (2024)
Smile 2 was a very disturbing and terrifying movie. The pacing is perfect, the acting, and the cinematography were great. It was better than the first installment of the franchise! The terrifying score and the film constantly had me ask myself what was reality and what was occurring in the main character’s mind.
