Alonzo White once lied to his mom. It wasn’t a huge lie, but it stuck with him more than he thought it would.
It started when he really wanted to go to a dance show. He was super excited and already had everything planned out. The only thing was, his mom had stated he could go only if his sister’s girlfriend picked him up after. So White promised her that his sister’s girlfriend would drive him home.
But then, at the last minute the girlfriend couldn’t come, so his sister told him, “Don’t worry, I’ll just order you an Uber. Mom doesn’t have to know.” Even though White didn’t like the idea of lying, he really didn’t want to miss the show, so he agreed.
The Uber came and White said the ride was totally normal. The driver didn’t even talk much, but the whole time White was just sitting there panicking. He kept thinking, “What if something happens? What if mom finds out?”
When he got home, his mom asked if the girlfriend picked him up and he just said, “yeah,” like it was nothing. She didn’t suspect a thing.
But that night, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. He said it made him feel kind of bad. It was a small lie, but it still felt wrong. He knows his mom just wants to keep him safe and he felt like he let her down a little, even if she didn’t know it.
He’s decided that next time, he’ll probably just tell the truth. White lies might not have been the biggest in the world, but it shows how even the small ones can stick with a person.
