Where did Decora/Harajuku fashion originate from?- The name “Decora” originates from the Japanese word “飾る” or “Kazaru” meaning “decoration”. Decora fashion originated in the area surrounding Harajuku station in Tokyo. An Example of this would be a Japanese idol named  “Tomoe Shinohara”. Her fashion choice is very similar to today’s Decora. 

What is Decora/Harajuku fashion?- It’s a prominent Japanese fashion that consists of; bright colors, an exaggerated amount of accessories (Hair clips, bracelets, rings, hats ETC), colorful hair, neon/bright make-up, bandaids, stickers, and more. 

What is the difference between Harajuku and Decora fashion?- The difference is what category a  certain Harajuku fashion falls under. Extremely accessorized  hair and clothing with bright colors would  fall under the category of “Decora Kei”,  while something puffy and colorful with frills and lace would fall under the category of “Lolita” or “pastel Ouji”.  (If if it’s darker colors like black but still frilly and puffy it would fall under the category of “gothic lolita” or “gothic Ouji”.)

What is Decora/Harajuku fashion inspired by?- Cartoon characters from the 80’s, some examples of that would be; Hello Kitty, Carebears, Strawberry Shortcake, and Pokemon are popular themes in Decora outfits.

When did Decora/Harajuku fashion start?- It appeared in the streets of Harajuku in the late 1990’s.

What are the different styles of Harajuku styles?- Some examples being: Lolita fashion, Gyaru, Gothic Lolita, Visual Kei, Goth, Decora, ETC.

Who’s the creator of Decora fashion?- The creator of Decora fashion is Tomoe Shinohara
