The Wu-Tang Clan has a special place in hip-hop history. Known for their raw sound and bold lyrics, they’ve inspired many fans and artists over the years. But what does Wu-Tang mean to younger listeners today? To find out, high school sophomore and film major Marcus Vickers, who grew up listening to Wu-Tang, was interviewed.
When Marcus was asked to listen to a Wu-Tang song and rate it, he didn’t hesitate to give it a 10. He said, “I grew up listening to Wu-Tang Clan, but I kind of forgot most of the songs from them…it jogged my memory a little bit. I used to know every word, but it’s been a few years since I heard it, so I low-key forgot. But I do give the song a 10.” Hearing Wu-Tang’s music again brought back memories for Marcus, showing how their songs have a lasting impact on fans who grew up with them.
Marcus was asked what makes Wu-Tang different from other hip-hop groups. “The fact that they’re a whole group, and you can distinctly define who each person is in the group, just off the tone of the voice,” he said. Each member has a unique voice and style, which makes Wu-Tang’s music stand out. This ability to recognize each member by their voice is a big part of what makes Wu-Tang special.
Marcus had mixed feelings about whether Wu-Tang’s music is still popular today. “Yes and no,” he said. “Reason why I say yes is because there’s still going to be old folks around driving like a low rider or something like that, listening to Wu-Tang Clan. But in terms of this generation? Absolutely not.” Wu-Tang still has fans, younger listeners are more focused on today’s music styles. This shows how hip-hop has changed over time, with each generation bringing its own style.
Wu-Tang’s music, while classic for some, may not have the same impact on younger listeners. For fans like Marcus, their music brings back memories and still holds value. Even as hip-hop changes, Wu-Tang’s influence is strong for those who appreciate the genre’s roots. For Marcus and many others, Wu-Tang Clan will always be a perfect 10.
