While reading Don’t Be In Love by Liana Cincotti, I couldn’t help but have an eye on another book of hers titled, Picking Daisies on Sundays. What really caught my attention was that it was written with the intention of being a 2000’s romantic love story. As I currently am still reading the book, I find it best to review the first chapter of the book to give you guys a glimpse of the opening and whether you should or shouldn’t begin reading it as well.
Chapter 1
The story takes off with the unnamed main character being on the phone with a friend of hers, Jia. While she was also hiding in a booth. Supposedly she was keeping an eye on her other friend, Gabe, while he was on a date. Then, Jia walked into the restaurant and the main character waved her over so she could find her and hung up the call. Jia was dressed very fashionable which leads us to learn that she works in fashion. Additionally, she has gained much experience within her current job, which questions the main character as to why she doesn’t quit already. Jia states that she hopes her boss, aka the “devil,” gets her into the Met Gala because then all will be worth it to her. The ladies get interrupted by their waiter, Josh, who they don’t know much about but they have formed a love-hate relationship considering they use this particular booth at the restaurant once in a while, “for scoping out dates in case we needed a reason to get out of an awkward situation (and to avoid being kidnapped).” In the end they always tip him very nicely and the main character would always also reward him by bringing him flowers. Josh expresses to them that they must order something, in which they reposed two water and a basket of fries. With annoyance he takes their orders to the back. The main character gives Jia a summary of what has been going on with Gabe’s date, at first sounding very positive. Although, ends off saying “and finished four glasses of wine,” and that he gave “the look.” This directs Jia that his date is officially wrapped up and gets out of her chair, but before going on she tells the main character to not forget about the fries. Jia walks up to Gabe’s table with anger slamming her hands on the table. She yells, “I tell you I’m pregnant and you decide to go on a date?” This makes Gabe choke on his food but goes along with the act, making Gabe’s date extremely concerned and confused. Jia grabs onto Gabe’s collar pulling him out of the restaurant from his horrible date as the main character received the fries just in time and walked out with them. They all laugh together from the crazy performance that took place. Jia states along her words while they were all talking our main character’s name, Daniella. They all soon walk into a bar, Gabe goes off to get drinks and Jia and Daniella continue talking while eating the fries. At some point Daniella grabs a hair clip from her purse to pick up her hair but accidentally drops it. She tries finding it and once she does she gets up but hits her head on someone’s beer. The next thing she knows she hears, “Daisy?” She looks up to see a man named Levi Coldwell.
Thoughts and Feelings
As I was reading I was on edge the entire time excited to read what comes next. I loved watching the friendship between Jia, Gabe and Daniella. They all seemed to be so fun to be around that I believe this makes the reader so fond over their friendship. Once I heard the name, Daisy, I was slightly confused considering we previously found out that the main character’s name is Daniella. This leads me to believe that it must have been a nickname of hers. Overall, the main curiosity I have is who Levi Coldwell is and what is his and Daniella relationship? I’m excited to see what comes next.
Conclusion
All in all, this book seems like it should be on everyone’s to-read list. Meaning that your next stop at Barnes & Noble or while shopping online you should definitely pick this book, whether just to read about beautiful friendship or to read the possible romance between Daniella and Levi. Until then, see you readers at my next current read article. Keep on reading!
