Olivia Rodrigo has evolved her music from her first album SOUR to GUTS. Her music has matured with her, showing her growth and progress in the music industry. The pop-rock style of the GUTS album gives a new take on Rodrigo’s experiences told in her music. Rodrigo started as a Disney actor but quickly rose to fame as her debut single Driver’s License went viral. Her music style when she started releasing music has now changed, from being innocent and authentic to angsty and mature. In the industry, Rodrigo has become really well known and mainstream at a young age. 

Rodrigo is great at connecting with her fans. One of her fans, LVA student Mika Lohrli, shares her opinions on the GUTS album and its songs. Mika expressed her feelings about her favorite song on the album. “My favorite song is probably Love is Embarrassing because it’s really relatable. I feel like a lot of people relate to it. So, I would say that one and it’s fun,” Mika said.

The style of GUTS is reminiscent of early 2000s pop-rock sound, with a lot of influences from music artists of that era. Mika said, “I love that she really plays into the pop rock style. I love the style of “Lacy” as well. Just the pop rock kind of, pop punk princess, like that kind of stuff. You can see her age transition from SOUR when she was 17 to GUTS, now that she’s 21.”

Olivia Rodrigo is also known for her impactful vocals. Mika explained her perspective on Rodrigo’s vocals. “Oh my gosh, you can totally see improvement, especially singing live, if you compare like SOUR tour and GUTS tour, yeah, totally see the difference. She’s improved a lot,” Mika said.

Some of the music of GUTS has an emotional impact on Rodrigo’s fans. “GUTS is just fun. Like, it’s more revenge rather than sad,” Mika said on the impact that GUTS had on her.

Lastly, we talked about how the production of GUTS made a big impact on the style of the album. “I actually really love the production of GUTS. I think that her producers did a really great job,” Mika said. “Really playing into that, kind of like the pop-punk vibe that we were talking about before.”
