10% of domestic sheep are found to have homosexual behavior. Unfortunately, they aren’t of use to farms because they don’t breed and make more lambs. This means the gay rams are killed and eaten, since they don’t reproduce.
However, this issue has been solved. Michael Stucke, a German herdsman, cares for the world’s first flock of gay sheep and made his company, Rainbow Wool. The goal of this company is to save these sheep from execution in other farms and to use their wool for clothing.
Rainbow Wool was created to raise awareness of the oppression encountered by the LGBTQ+ community. He figured that if people saw queerness as natural, they would understand the LGBTQ+ community better.
Michael Stucke and Rainbow Wool have succeeded in bringing awareness to the LGBTQ+ community, as Rainbow Wool has gained nationwide attention. Gay sheep from all over Germany get sent to Rainbow Wool to live there, instead of being killed.
The wool is used to make a variety of things, such as shirts, coats, hats, patches, decorations, and other kinds of clothing items and merchandise. While these items can be pricey, Rainbow Wool offers cheaper alternatives to help their cause, such as “adopting” a sheep. For one dollar, you can guarantee a sheep another day on the farm and save one from being slaughtered.
Rainbow Wool also offers farm tours, including being able to explore the farm, meeting the sheep, being given the opportunity to eat old family recipes, and a short Q&A with Michael Stucke. The tour lasts approximately two to two and a half hours.
All proceeds from Rainbow Wool go to LSVD+ (Lesben- und Schwulenverband in Deutschland, or The Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany). LSVD+ is Germany’s largest LGBTQ+ rights organization. Formed in 1990, they are present in the media and politics for LGBTQ+ rights.
Rainbow Wool is an incredible company, Michael Stucke is an advocate for what he believes in, rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation. Sponsor a gay sheep, or donate to LSVD+ today. Any amount counts!
