A book I would recommend is Spiral by Bal Khabra. This book stands out because it mixes sports romance with serious mental health themes. It is honestly such an emotional and addictive read, especially if you like sports romance with a deeper side. The story follows Sage, a ballerina who’s dealing with a lot of pressure and personal struggles, and Elias, a hockey player trying to prove himself while also carrying his own baggage. They start off in a fake relationship which is already a fun trope, but what makes this book stand out is how real their connection starts to feel over time.
One thing I really liked was how the author didn’t just focus on romance; there’s a lot about mental health, self-doubt, and trying to live up to expectations. Sage’s journey, especially, feels super raw because you see how hard she pushes herself and how much she’s hurting inside. Elias, on the other hand, starts off kind of closed off, but seeing him slowly open up and try to understand Sage (like when he learns ballet terms just for her) is really sweet and makes you like him more.
The relationship between them feels pretty natural, even though it starts off fake, and their chemistry is really good. There are definitely some emotional moments that hit hard, and it’s not just a light, fluffy romance; it actually makes you think about how people deal with their struggles and how important it is to have someone who supports you.
Overall, I’d say Spiral is a really good mix of romance and deeper themes. It’s cute, emotional, and a little heartbreaking at times, but in a good way. If you’re into stories where the character actually grows, and the relationship feels meaningful, it’s definitely worth reading. It helps you learn about how love takes effort, and healing and trusting others help you grow into a stronger version of yourself.
