Teaching kids art takes a lot of skill and sometimes years to master. I have been assisting and teaching elementary school kids art through my mom’s business for 6 years now. I have definitely learned a lesson or two from working with kids.
These are the steps you can take to prepare and teach kids:
1. Know what art project you will be teaching. It is important to know what art project you are doing so that you can prepare the right materials.
2. Get a head count of kids and prepare enough material. You want to know how many people will be attending your class so that you can prepare enough or even extra materials for the project.
3. Be patient with the kids. You have no idea how the kids might behave that day and you just have to stay calm and patient.
4. Manage your time wisely. Make sure that you are staying on top of the time and you are not running behind schedule. This will help keep a smooth flow of the class and no one is rushing to get finished.
5. Have fun and connect with the kids. If you are enjoying the class the kids will enjoy it with you. Make connections and be welcoming so that the kids feel comfortable around you.
Overall, it’s all about how you approach the class and the kids. If you provide an outlet to express their creativity and imagination, then they can shine in your class.
