At the start of the school year, Las Vegas Academy of the Arts’ Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) began. The DECA club is advised by the LVA Marketing teacher, Mr. Moukad. Many students joined, but that still leaves people who don’t know what DECA is about!
An interview with DECA member Owen Keck explains the fundamentals of DECA. “DECA teaches you about marketing, and it prepares you for what business adventures in the future and how to approach them,” said Keck.
DECA’s purpose is to help students get ready for a future of getting into a business field, and how this could help them prepare to be more successful and express themselves in that career. It can prepare them for scenarios and problems they may encounter in the business world.
Keck continues to tell us more about the situations they prepare within the club. “DECA does mock roleplays, where basically we get a situation in a business, and we get 15 minutes to prepare and then portray that role play, and someone acts as the president, or like whoever is in charge of us, and we’re presenting ideas or solutions to them,” said Keck.
Engaging in these roleplays gives them a good idea of what possible scenarios they may encounter. DECA allows them to become more formal in fast thinking and be able to present solutions to an audience. In these roles, they’re able to become naturals; DECA has multiple roles and scenarios to be applied for.
“So in DECA, there’s the president, the VP of Marketing, the VP of hospitality, the VP of Finance, the VP of leadership and the VP of career development, which are all different, like types of career clusters in DECA, so they’re in charge of those specific areas and people who want to be or go into those specific areas,” said Keck, explaining what possible leadership positions kids can take in DECA.
DECA comes with many valuable utilities to prepare members for the marketing world. Taking on different roles and responsibilities could benefit students. This could be in the way of taking leadership positions, problem-solving, or working under pressure to get the best result. All in all, DECA helps students in high school and beyond, introducing them to the business or marketing field in an efficient and helpful manner.
