A group of talented graphic designers from Las Vegas Academy of the Arts (LVA) recently brought color, design, and comfort to Sunrise Children’s Hospital through the installation of a set of vibrant new murals. Designed and installed by students, the mural aims to share a vision of creativity, positivity and hope, specifically to uplift the young patients and their families during challenging times.
This project was a collaborative effort between LVA’s Graphic Design program and members of the LVA SkillsUSA club. From the early design stages to the day of installation, students worked hands-on to create a final product that felt uplifting to all. Child Life Specialist Payton Janey says, “Hospitals are scary. There’s a lot of stuff that kids have never seen before, it’s clean in here and it’s bright in here which makes it look a lot scarier, but the murals make kids remember, help kids remember that they’re kids. They can see all of this stuff, and they can relate to it and it helps our staff to distract their brains so they don’t think about the hospital as much.”
Beyond the visual appeal, the mural has made a positive impact on the community. For the patients, families, and staff at the children’s hospital, this artwork offers a distraction and a sense of encouragement in an environment that can oftentimes feel overwhelming. By contributing something personal and uplifting, the students have been able to give back to the community in a way that goes beyond traditional volunteering. Fellow Child Life Specialist Gabby Fiores emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment, noting that, “Working at a children’s hospital, there needs to be some sort of warmth and comfort… when they see wonderful murals like these, it makes the hospital a little bit more comfortable.”
The experience also had a strong impact on the students and the school itself, participating in a real world project allowed these students to apply their design skills in a meaningful way. This also strengthened the connection between students at LVA by allowing for collaboration between clubs, and classes, showcasing how student-led initiatives can create positive change beyond the classroom.
This project highlights the dedication and creativity of LVA students, as well as their commitment to giving back and improving the community. By combining artistic talent with community service these students were able to leave their mark, and brighten the days of those who get to experience their artwork.
